Been a bit quiet lately due to college deadlines, health reasons and Christmassy stuff, but let's cut to the chase and get back on track.

Here's a series of images I did recently based on the story of Pinocchio for a college project we're tackling at the moment, where we have to interpret one of three classic tales (Wizard of Oz, Little Red Riding Hood and Pinocchio), design three characters from it and illustrate two full pages based on original passages;

Pinocchio in a surreal and warped village, kinda drawing on Shaun Tan's stuff a bit here.

His father and creator Gipetto, complete with weird gadgets and a backpack thingamajig.

Aaaand finally, one of the two assasins (the fox and cat in disguise) that mug Pinocchio on his way back home.

Nothing much else to report, other than I might be drawing a script for a future Longstone Comics anthology if I have the time. 2D Derry comics festival dates have been announced too, hopefully might make it down for the first time this year.
Also, I bought a snazzy Sgt. Rock print by Brian Bolland, I'll post pics when it comes in the post.

War - Huh!

If you know me personally or have followed my blog for a while you'll probably know that I love drawing war scenarios. A lot. That kinda happens when you grow up on Commando comics and plastic toy guns! So here's a few bits and bobs;

This first piece is just a quick sketch of a US Marine trying to get a good angle on a German tank. I haven't done the proper research here as any war-enthusiast will probably tell you, the tank for example is just a wild stab in the dark at what I remember Panzers to look like.

The second pic is yet another of my fanwank ideas - a Sgt. Rock serial set in Nam, only it'd star the son of the original Frank Rock (and father of the Rock character in DC's ongoing Men of War). Obligatory 'captured by VCs and beaten to within an inch of his life during interrogation' scene, of course.

And finally for tonight, the third thing is conceptual sketch of two of the characters for a short WWII comic I'm working on with my good pal Santiago (this one won't take a year, promise!).

Sandles Breaking Puddles

Some Usagi Yojimbo fanart, which I started reading over the summer. Amazing that Sakai continues to put out stories 200 issues and 20 years on! Some of the best cartooning in the biz to be found in those books.

Oh yeah I got into Illustration anyway, althought that was three weeks ago so it's old news now. But at least I'm not repeating, or worse yet - doing nothing at all. The folks that make up our rather large class are swell people and a handful of them can be found linked under on the right-side of my blog under 'Cool Arty Irish Folks'. Check em out!

Considering going to Thought Bubble this year, stellar lineup and t'would be my first proper comic convention but it all comes down to the eternal problem of NOT HAVING ANY FUCKING MONEY. I'm trying to sell a few trinkets though, and am pretty certain I've landed myself a student grant. Here's hoping it comes before November...

Woo, college is over, guess I better fill that void between now and September with blogging and other internet wankery.

Here's a pic of G.I. Robot I did during a break at college a few days ago. I was planning on doing a huge Nam backdrop, with the usual Hueys flying over the treetops and burning napalm and so forth, but the pen I was using ran out so no dice. I've been toying with the idea of a proper G.I. Robot miniseries set in Nam and how cool it'd be since he hasn't seen any real action since the days of G.I. Combat.

Oh yeah, the 24 Hour Comic Event was a blast! Managed to beat my spiffy record of five pages with a far more respectable fourteen! I pencilled a simple story of a German army squad ambushed by a demon while driving through the snowy Russian countryside. I took some photos but they're of absolutely terrible quality, so I think I'll hold off on posting em until I get proper scans...

Let myself slip again, bugger. Well, a whole boat-load of nothing has happened since. I am repeating Animation Drawing Studies in Ballyer though, because I was a lazy shit and failed my FETAC pro-style. I even got offered a place in Illustration. Oh well, at least I only have to do four modules (which means I only have to come in on Thursday and Friday!).

I'm attending the 24 Hour Comics Day again this Saturday, so if you're in or around town pop in and have a look-see what's going on. Bound to great craic, as previous years have proven. Here's hoping I get more than six pages done...

This is a rough of the third page of a five-page sci-fi comic me and a guy called Santiago Mayaud are working on. It's called Charge of the Lighspeed Brigade and we're hoping to submit it to 2000AD as a Future Shock.
The story takes place in space (unintentional rhyming there!) and is a sci-fi reimagining of the Charge of the Light Brigade, albeit with a few tweaks.

I'm just finishing up on a rough of the fifth page, but to be honest I could've done a lot more had I not wasted most of my past two months on the internet and playing games. This realization only hit me today, and I'm fucking pissed off with myself at the moment. I mean I'm quite notorious for neglecting my work, but drawing comics is something I enjoy so I don't know what the fuck is wrong with me. Its what I want to do for a living, until old age denies me the ability to grip a pencil properly...

On that note, if I don't wake up too late I hope to give Summer Edition a visit tomorrow. Haven't seen most Irish comic peeps since the 24 Hour Comics Day (oh fuck that reminded me: I've yet to scan my comic from that too) so it should be cool. Pick up a few comics while I'm at it too, considering I've haven't kept up with the Irish comics put out in the past year at all.

What's that thing people do when they put that piece of lead encased in wood to another piece of wood and drag it along in various fashions? Oh yeah, draw. And what a coincky-dink, here's some random crap right now!;

Been doing a few sketches of ol' Joe recently. I was always previously reluctant to do so, because I hated drawing his right shoulder pad but I've come to love how awkward it is.
Oh, and I apologize for the quality of the scans, or rather the quality of the paper on which I am working on (mega-cheapo printer shit). I'm a stingy bastard and I hate to see my good Daler Rowney Heavyweight paper go to waste.

Read Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, and loved the shit out of London Underground. Mister Croup and Mister Vandemar are excellent characters too, in a fucked up Laurel and Hardy kind of way.

Well, today's St. Paddy's. And what did I do? I spent the night kicking back on the PC, eating chink dinner and drinking Bulmers. And that's cool with me!

Don't worry, its just me attempting to improve my blogging consistency. I figured I spend too much time doing fuck all on the internet, so I might as well write about doing fuck all.

Art ahoy; this is something I cobbled together the other day, just to show how much I've improved in a few months (largely thanks to Friday's life-drawing class).

Oh yeah, as much as I hate Forbidden Planet these days, their bargain bin downstairs rocks. Picked up Ring of Roses a few weeks ago for dirt cheap, and just yesterday I found volume five of Sardine In Outer Space for only two-fiddy! Check that shit out.

Watched Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart today. Exceptional stuff, as is per norm with Ghibli. Dream sequences were incredibly inspiring, too. Although its a damn shame I watched its spin-off, The Cat Returns first. All this week Film4 are showing Ghibli films early in the morning. Plan on watching Porco Rosso and My Neighbour Totoro...

Also got around to seeing The Princess and the Frog last week. I was more than delighted to experience a return to traditional animation in Disney, and they were on top-form with this. Great musical numbers, lovely classical animation and character designs, and brilliant voice-acting too. Some suprisingly dark elements (well, dark compared to Disney's usual formula).
Dr. Facilier was such a fucking badass and stole the show for me. I mean, you can't top a black voodoo doctor voiced by Keith Davids!!! Up there with Hades and Captain Hook as best Disney villains, without doubt! Actually, just typing this is inspiring me to draw some Facilier fanart. Hmm...

Don't ask me what the context of this situation is!

In other nuacht, fair play to all the Irish Academy Award nominees (all of whom graduated from my college :P). It'll be a right boost for this country's tiny animation industry if one of the films gets an award. Meaning a job for me after college! It shames me to say I haven't seen either Granny O' Grimm or Secret of Kells, but I will get around to it... eventually.

Speaking of Irish animation, I recently stumbled upon a fella called Eamon O' Neill's stuff while researching Japanese animation maestros Studio 4c. He's a recent graduate of IADT, and his work is absolutely amazing; reminiscent of afforementioned studio's style with lovely fluid animation and grainy backgrounds. Just some art from recently. First pic is me messing around with OpenCanvas. The other two are doodles from today, where I decided to experiment a little and combine a Letraset marker and Staedtler fine line pen. It looks nice, but I'm not completely convinced I want to go in that artistic direction.
That's what I hate about myself, that I can't seem to settle on one style. Arrrggghh, fuck.

Dave McKean signing

I was at Dave McKean's (Sandman, Cages, Mr. Punch) signing today in Easons. He and Neil Gaiman (whom I met at a signing in the same store last year) recently released a children's book called Crazy Hair. Unfortunately, he came expecting an audience of kids so his slideshow wasn't particularly aimed towards the people that did come, but Dave McKean being the brilliant bastard he is, is interesting at whatever he does, for whomever. We got to see some pics of upcoming works, such as his new feature length film project Luna.
There was a short Q&A after that, with some interesting insight from the man into his creative processes and methods. And after that was the signing. I got Varjak Paw, a Graveyard Book poster, Arkham Aslyum: A Serious House On Serious Earth, Sandman volume one and Crazy Hair all signed! He even did an awesome Batman sketch in Arkham, and a full-page Morpheus in Sandman (as as I requested :D). He's a really, really nice chap, and it was certainly a pleasure meeting one of my favourite artists of all time.
I'll have some pics of said drawings soonish.

I was going to name this post 'Just a quickie' but I realised I already used that exact title before, hah.

24 Hour Comics Day was absolutely fucking brilliant. An experience I'll never forget. Suprisingly enough, I did manage to stay awake the full time. Unsuprisingly, I didn't get 24 pages done. In fact, I only got five done. Being the stickler for detail I have always been, I got too bogged down on particular panels. Oh well, I learnt my lesson.
I'll have a full report on the day on Friday or Saturday sometime.

I only noticed today that I've never scanned in any pics from my sketchbooks. So here's a few;

Resurrection

Wow, I really haven't posted since July? Fuck's sake.
Well no matter, here I am again. Hopefully returning to writing on a consistent level now.
I'm in Ballyfermot CFE these days studying Animation (Animation Drawing Studies in particular), and its fucking great! Its only been a month and I reckon I've improved a fair bit already. Layout & Design is currently my favourite class, but the rest are enjoyable too. Five-hours of life-drawing is well helpful and interesting, although it saps you of energy for the rest of the day.

Saw Up last Friday. We opted to go see it in the Savoy for once (Cineworld being our usual cinema) because Cineworld was only screening it in 3d. Suprisingly, the Savoy is a really fucking amazing. Toilets in the screening room, curtain drawbacks, comfy-as-hell chairs, and only €6.50 for students! I know where I'll be watching films from now on, that's for sure.
Oh yeah, and the film itself was astonishing, possibly one of Pixar's best efforts. Fantastic overall design, great score, a really engaging storyline and the usual Pixar host of creatively brilliant characters.

As some of you may know, the Irish 24 Hour Comics Day is happening this Saturday. I was at last year's event, although I only stayed for a few hours due to the Leaving Cert. You can see my one page here.
I plan to go for the full 24 hours this year. Quite a daunting task, going without sleep for a full day and tring to retain focus on my drawing for the entire time, I'll admit. But damn if I didn't enjoy the short time I spent there last year, so staying the night will most likely be a blast.
Not sure if I'll bother with any of the workshops. I'd rather focus on my comic more than anything. I might take an hour or two off to read the free comics though.

Well that's it for now. Gotta get an early night in tonight and tomorrow in preperation.

Beneath A Neon Sky

A quick post to say I just finished pencilling the first page to my comic project, Beneath A Neon Sky. Its a science-fiction cyberpunk noir tale of a robot detective who works in a bustling metropolis on the verge of welcoming extraterrestrials onto Earth for the first time.
I'll have sketches and more on it later.

I was at Oxegen on Saturday. I'm kinda tired now though, so I'll post about it in a day or two. It was great though, aside from the shitty weather...
Attached pic is of my take on an old obscure Wonder Woman villain named The Blue Snowman, who is actually a woman behind the mask. Yeah, confused the fuck out of me as well.
Someone anonymous on the internet kindly coloured this for me and it looked twice as good, but I forgot to save the damn thing. Shame too, considering how little colour work I do.

The only Borders store in Ireland is closing down very soon. It was a great, if a little expensive bookstore that had an awesome selection of comics.

Today I walked from Maynooth to the next town, Kilcock with two of my friends, Richy and Brian. We travelled along the canal. When we got to Kilcock, we stayed for a while in Brian's grandad's house. His grandad was an incredibly interesting guy and all round nice person. His house was just as interesting as well! It was lined with old decorations, clocks, porcelain figurines, newspapers, small art prints etc. that kind of thing.
We ran a quarter of the way back, since we were getting tired. Doing soonly proved how unfit I truly am, hahah. I think in total we walked around 8 miles. I'm pretty happy with that.

Man, this fucking heat is killing me. I can't stand days like this, where the flies are everywhere, your trousers stick to ya, the computer overheats, and you just don't feel like doing jack shit.
All I ask for is a petty breeze! Christ...

The drawing above is something I did yesterday. Its Dream from the Sandman comics having tea with Paprika from the anime feature Paprika.

Aah, my Leaving Cert is finally over! And thus, my life begins anew. The fact I'm finished school forever still has yet to hit me though. I still feel as if there are some upcoming exams to finish, or essays to hand in. Weird. Hope I'll shake it off soon, or I ain't gonna get a thing done all Summer.
And speaking of, I do hope to get a lot of things done, including;

- Watching tons of films, be it from my own DVD collection, on Film4, or at the cinema. I'd like to maybe watch over fifty films over the Summer...
- Do a lot of life drawing. And improve anatomy skills in general.
- Start work on a comic and hopefully find some way of publishing it. No real ideas yet though.
- Start walking at least once every night. I'm not overweight, but I'm not terribly fit either.
- Get a job. If that's at all attainable, in this current economic climate. But really, I seriously need some fucking money.
- Read a lot of comics, and subsequently more novels as well (to the library I go!)
- Take up guitar.

Well that's my aims so far. Are they realistic? I dunno, but I'm gonna give them a crack anyway. I don't want to be stuck in my house everyday playing the PS3 for hours upon hours. I'd rather be stuck in the house drawing for hours and hours! :P

Ya Got Tha LC Blues

Sooo... Leaving Cert's coming up in less than three weeks now. Fuck. Not looking forward to this at all, but at least it'll be done and over with by next month!
Got my history study report (on the use of gas warfare in WWI) done in the last minute a few weeks back, and I finished my art practicals last week too. Imaginative Comoposition was OK, nothing spectacular. Life Drawing was handy, seeing as it comes quite naturally to me anyway. And the Poster Craftwork was great fun. I picked the fantasy film title ("Architects of Ruin") and drew a pic of a beggar stood in his tracks as a robed figure stares at him from the top of a hill, with a massive fantasy background of caves, mountains, forests and shit. I inked it B&W, and was overall very happy with the result.
Thankfully, I get the Poster Craftwork back after its been marked. Good thing too, it might look good in my portfolio...

And speaking of portfolios; I got the offer to do Animation Drawing Studies in Ballyfermot PLC two months ago. And today, I recieved an email from Dun Laoghaire saying I got 480 points out of a total 600 for my portfolio, for their Animation course. Nice! I'm pretty sure I'll be going to Ballyfermot, but I'd be equally happy to find out if I get offered a place in Dun Laoghaire as well.
And while I'm discussing animation, I'm currently reading the excellent Your Career In Animation, by David Levy. Highly interesting stuff, there's a lot of advice that suprised me in it, and I'm sure it'll be an even better book when I actually get into producing animation.

Watched Coraline recently, and I have to say; ITS ONE OF THE FUCKING GREATEST FILMS EVER MADE IN THE PAST DECADE. Seriously. Go see it, now. I'd love to see it again. Fuck. I'm convinced it has surpassed Selick's The Nightmare Before Christmas as well, and it takes a lot to top a classic like that. The pacing, the backgrounds, the character design and voicework, the score; everything is near perfect in this film. Goddamn.

In other nuacht, I'm thinking about buying a table at the Edition Book Arts Exhibition in July. I'd like to get my name out there a bit, but I'm worried I might not have enough material to put on my table...
Well, even if I don't buy a table, I'll definitely be down on the day to check out what the usual Irish comics crew are at! :P

Things've been hectic lately...
Had my Ballyfermot PLC interview for the Animation Drawing Studies course last Friday, which went swell. They liked my stuff and said to expect an offer in the post this week.
Had my Dun Laoghaire IADT portfolio assessment today. Even though I had to wake up at fucking five in the morning, it wasn't as bad a day as I expected. Unfortunately I don't get the results from them until May.

While in Forbidden Planet, I picked up Liam Geraghty and Philip Barrett's excellent Gazebo, issue #1 (would've done so earlier, only FP's major leakage problem closed the Irish comics section off; the horror!). I really fucking dig Phil's cleancut and precise artwork, and Liam is a fantastic writer (can tackle humour and a serious slice-of-life tale greatly) as well! I highly recommend it!
Also finished Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, good stuff as well. Amazingly, I became just as infatuated with Kurtz, just as Marlow did...

According to Rob Curley, a new (and bigger?) Sub City will be opening up on West Essex St. later this year!

Epic Con 09'

It's been a while, eh? I probably wouldn't be writing this right now if tomorrow wasn't the beginning of the midterm break! On with the show...
Yesterday and today, I attended Epic Con 09' at NUI Maynooth, which was dead handy since I live only 15 minutes away from there. Here's some photos, and here's the haps';

SATURDAY

Got up later than I should've, thankfully Dan (who was coming with me to the con) woke up late as well. Mobile phones are not good alarm clocks, goddamn.
Got to the John Hume building, paid for entry and shit. Picked up free Viz Sneak Peak volumes and two posters (Bleach and Death Note)
Had a quick look through some of the dealer rooms, suprised by the amount of manga on sale (did they get it all from Chapters?)
Decided to take on the Torture Room Challenge, in which you have to sit 7 hours or so of four shit films, which included;

Mortal Kombat II : Annhilation (FUCKING BAD FIGHTING, SHITTY ACTING)
Starship Troopers 2 (WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON, WHY IS THAT CHICK NAKED FOR NO REASON, WHY DID THAT GUY DECIDE TO STAY ON THE BUILDING)
Super Mario Bros (Yes, the live-action film. Better than I expected, though completely directionless shit. And why didn't Luigi have a tache...)
Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter (BEST WORST FILM EVER!! GO WATCH IT!!!)

The last film made it worth staying the entire thing for. We barely had any breaks at all, and to win you had to clock up the most time spent in the room. Unfortunately, we were told at the end of the day that today's time would be added onto the four films tomorrow, and there was no fucking way I was going to waste my day again, I wanted to do other shit.

SUNDAY

Got up late AGAIN, fuck you phone. Missed part of Cliodhna's talk. Actually, I practically missed all of it by the time I got there. Thanks for the advice anyways Cliodhna...
Finished off a fantasy-setting drawing I did overnight for the art competition
Listened to the talk on Space Warfare. presented by a very energetic fellow. Highlight of the talk? Power-armor suits are a possibility! Fuck yes.
Fucked around taking photos of people and shit (link to my Flickr account with some later)
Bought two volumes of the anime series Haibane Renmei for only a tenner (big thanks to the cute chick with the goggles who owned was selling that stuff!)
For the last hour, visited the Sci-Fi/Anime screening room and watched;

Darker Than Black ep1 (seems very interesting, would like to see more)
Invader Zim Halloween Special. The scene where Zim squeezes himself into the portal in Dib's head was fucking sick but awesome. I like that show, but the random humour does my fucking head in some times...
Samurai Jack (watched the last episode due to the demand of the four people in the room including me, and IT WAS GREAT, mainly because of the hilarious reaction faces Aku and Jack pulled for five minutes straight)
The first few minutes of Hulk VS Wolverine. It was suprisingly well-animated, I think I spotted Masao Muruyama's name in there so Studio 4c must be involved...

Everyone was then assembled into the talks room for the ending ceremony and prize-giving. There was more people than I expected, and the whole room filled up. Me and Dan thankfully sat away from some of the giddier cosplayers thank fuck. Eventually the staff-folk came in and put the selectable prizes on the table. The first prize awarded was to Keitaro, the brave soul who stayed in the Torture Room the longest (me and Dan were determined to beat his ass, but realised the futility the next day). True to his predictions, he ended up with a shit prize of an hourglass! I imagine that was the only thing he could pick, as the rest of the prizes were novels (and his English mightn't be good enough etc.). Second prize winner was yours truly for the art competition, of which only three others entered;

I only got to see one other entry, and it was nicely-coloured but typical anime-style girl (it also had a fucking Deviantart stamp on it, fucking christ), and I think I saw a bit of what seemed to be a doodle on a lined copy page, hahah. I picked up H.G. Well's The Invisible Man, as I've been wanting to read that guy's stuff for a while.
Cosplay winners were announced, the main winner was Vincent Valentine from Final Fantasy, fairplay to him.
After that, two winners from the RPG games. And after that, the raffle prizes. Long story short, I won a copy of Sandman volume 1, which I'm over-the-fucking-moon with.
To round it off, a fireworks/explosives display with mad fucking chemistry, put on by Professor Ken from the college. It was damn awesome.

T'was a fucktacular weekend.

Neil Gaiman signing in Easons

Attached photo is of me getting some of my stuff signed by the great Neil Gaiman (creator of Sandman, Neverwhere, Stardust). I was at his book signing the day before Hallowen, along with two nice folk from Boards.ie (Brendan and Nichola). Gaiman arrived around seven, read an excerpt from his newly-released The Graveyard Book, had a humourous Q&A, and eventually signed people's swag (he was very generous about how many items you could have him sign; I got my copy of The Graveyard Book, Neverwhere, a poster and my Merv Pumpkinhead bust-up signed).
My minute-or-so with Neil seems almost like it never happened. I don't even fucking remember saying much to him! He's a great chap nonetheless, and I'll never forget his amazing voice either...
There's two other photos I have of me with him, and several others taken by Brendan, but I'm not sure if he'd like me linking to his Flickr account, so you'll have to do with that one.

Yeah... here's a little ditty I pencilled out a few month ago, I only decided recently to ink the thing. I quite liked the film Wall-E, and the relationship between Wall-E and Eve was cute, hence the picture. Also, I was interested in how they might look in human form (no shit!)

Tomorrow I'm heading off to Dun Laoghaire IADT's Open Day, I'm not too interested in it, but they've got Film Production and Animation so I might as well give it a gander.
On Saturday I'll be attending my weekly portfolio preparation course in the Nation Gallery, which I think is having a great impact on my portfolio (read: I'm actually getting material done for it).
I'd like to be staying after that day to go see The Thing and Otomo Yoshide play in Andrew Lane's Theatre, but my plans for that have been crushed due to a babysitting job I've been asked to do for one of my cousins heading off to live in Australia...
Hmm, it would be so awesome if I had a good bit of money in my pockets every week (there's so much crap I wanna' buy...)

Finally done my exams today, fuck yeah! Not too happy with one or two of them, but eh.
Attached is my (one) page for the Irish 24 Hour Comics Day. Notice the legendary second panel people quite liked because of the intrinsic crosshatching. It also took me two fucking hours. Yeah.
It's really just an excuse for me to try out various styles, haha.
Also notice how crooked my panels are. I can't say I ever liked using a ruler, but fuck I need to be more accurate...

Irish 24 Hour Comics Day!

Today was Irish 24 Hour Comics Day and Free Irish Comic Book Day. I was at the 24 Hour Comics event, and twas a blast! Unfortunately, I couldn't stay the whole 24 hours, due to exams this Tuesday, but I had great craic in the 5 or so hours, met some great new people as well.
I'll have more on the day next post, I'm too bloody tired right now, but fair play to all of ye's still in the Central Hotel right now! And I'll have my one (!) page up as well...

On a side note, got three tickets to Neil Gaiman's book signing this month, fuck yeah!

Attached above is just a small thing I drew a few months back, it's missing the end three panels (I've yet to do!), it's pretty half-assed and I'll probably re-draw the thing...
